A Journey of Resilience and Hope
Daniel Hettmann, a 39-year-old model from Germany, has faced an extraordinary battle against cancer that has tested his strength, resilience, and determination. His journey began as a teenager when he was approached by a model scout during a trip to Paris. This chance encounter led to a career that many would only dream of—walking runways for top fashion houses like Chanel, Givenchy, and Paul Smith, and even appearing in an Armani TV ad.
However, life took a dramatic turn when, at the age of 22, Mr. Hettmann was diagnosed with blood cancer. After undergoing successful treatment, he entered remission. But fate had more challenges in store. In 2017, after moving to London, he fell ill again and was treated successfully once more.
The story took a heartbreaking turn in 2024 when Mr. Hettmann began experiencing recurring health issues. A blood test revealed that a form of blood cancer had returned. He underwent a stem cell transplant, which initially appeared successful. However, this October, he discovered that the cancer had returned once again.

Due to a little-known rule on the NHS, Mr. Hettmann is not eligible for a second stem cell procedure free of charge. The rule bars anyone who has a relapse within a year of their transplant from receiving another operation at no cost. Speaking to the Daily Mail, he described his experience as “a roller coaster.”
“I was basically told two weeks ago the cancer was back, with a mutation,” he said. “Too much radiotherapy can actually cause cancer, which is why it was not unlikely for someone with my medical history. Cancer can often be caused by too much treatment in the past.”
Despite the emotional toll, Mr. Hettmann expressed feelings of anger for the first time. “Until now I was just somebody who said ‘ok, it is what it is.’ That’s why I never stopped working. I always took the mindset of asking what the universe wanted to tell me.”
Embracing Life One Day at a Time
Even in the face of adversity, Mr. Hettmann remains focused on making the most of each day. He is currently raising money on GoFundMe to cover the costs of a new stem cell operation. His donor will be his sister, who is not a complete match but has given him hope.

Mr. Hettmann shared that he was supposed to fly to Saudi Arabia to organize a fashion week on the day he found out the cancer had returned. “For three days I was on my couch paralysed, not really wanting to talk and hoping I’d wake up from a bad dream. But on Sunday I decided to jump on a plane and I was there for 10 days— we produced all the shows. A lot of people thought I was crazy but we did it and it was amazing.”
He emphasized the importance of taking things one day at a time. “Making every day miserable is not going to help.” For Mr. Hettmann, maintaining a positive mindset is crucial—not just for himself, but for those he loves.
His journey is a testament to the power of resilience, hope, and the human spirit. While the road ahead may be uncertain, he continues to move forward with courage and determination.
