The Disappearance of Gus Lamont: A Mystery That Haunts a Community
The disappearance of four-year-old Gus Lamont has left a community in eastern South Australia in shock and confusion. Last seen playing near his grandparents’ homestead on a sheep station 40km south of Yunta, Gus vanished without a trace, leaving behind only a single footprint and a growing sense of unease.
Gus was last seen at around 5pm on September 27. His grandmother, Shannon Murray, went to call him in about 30 minutes later but found no sign of the little boy. The family immediately raised the alarm, and police began an extensive search of the 60,000ha property. Despite their efforts, no clues were found, and the search was eventually scaled back from rescue to recovery on October 3.
New Search Efforts and Frustration
Last week, South Australia Police announced that they would resume the search for Gus. On Friday, officers drained the dam on the family’s homestead to rule out the possibility that he may have drowned. However, no trace of the four-year-old was found, and the search continues.
With the possibility of drowning ruled out, online speculation has exploded. Many people are refusing to believe that Gus simply wandered off. Some have expressed frustration with the police’s approach, questioning why more attention hasn’t been given to other possibilities.
- “They keep insisting he wandered off. I wish they’d look at other avenues,” one person wrote.
- “There are workers on those sheep farms. Where is their questioning? There’s more to this.”
- “A third suggested: ‘There’s no way a kid disappears into thin air with only one footprint on a property that size.'”
Some believe foul play is the only explanation. One commenter wrote, “Someone has him.” Another added, “If an eagle or fox grabbed him, there would be signs.”

Alternative Theories and Community Concerns
While many online theories point toward foul play, some have offered alternative explanations. One person suggested, “I have this sickly feeling he’s fallen into a wombat burrow.” However, the overwhelming sentiment remains one of unease and suspicion.
Many locals were hoping that draining the dam would bring closure for the close-knit community, which has been devastated by the loss of one of their own. A long-time resident told Daily Mail that people were waiting with bated breath for any news.
“You don’t want him to be found like that, but at the same time, at least we’d know what’s happened,” they said.
The Investigation and Official Statements
Gus was last seen outside his grandparents’ house on September 27. He was under the care of his grandmother while his mother, Jessica, and grandparent, Josie, tended to their herd of sheep 10km away.
Police have stated that, to date, investigations have not uncovered any evidence of foul play. However, they have also cast doubt on the significance of the single footprint found about 500m from the homestead.
Despite their best efforts, the only trace of Gus was the footprint. Based on scientific and professional advice, police made the difficult decision to scale back the search, considering how long a four-year-old could survive alone in remote terrain in freezing overnight temperatures.
Gus was last seen wearing a grey broad-brimmed hat, a blue long-sleeved shirt with a Minion picture from Despicable Me on the front, light grey pants, and boots.
South Australian Assistant Police Commissioner Ian Parrott said police believe Gus wandered off and was not taken, as the only people who travel on the nearby road are station owners.
“Everything that we have found to date, every piece of information and evidence that we have explored to date, indicates that, as best as we know, Gus has wandered off from this property and we have not been able to locate him,” Parrott said.

Calls for Help and Continued Search
Anyone with information is urged to contact the police. The mystery surrounding Gus’s disappearance continues to baffle rescuers and leave no trace in the vast, unforgiving Outback.
