Ethiopia Embarks on Nuclear Power Program to Bolster Energy Security and Drive Economic Transformation
Addis Ababa – Ethiopia has officially launched its Nuclear Power Programme, marking a significant step towards diversifying its energy sources and fueling its rapidly growing economy. The initiative, spearheaded by the Ethiopian Nuclear Energy Commission, aims to harness nuclear technology for electricity generation, industrial growth, food security, healthcare delivery, and scientific research.
The launch event, held in Addis Ababa, brought together key figures, including Foreign Minister Gedion Timothewos, Ethiopian Nuclear Energy Commissioner Sandokan Debebe, and Mikhail Chudakov, Deputy Director General of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA).
Rationale Behind the Nuclear Initiative
Commissioner Debebe emphasized that Ethiopia’s decision to embrace nuclear technology is driven by a need for enhanced energy security, economic transformation, and long-term national resilience. He highlighted the vulnerability of relying solely on hydropower, which is susceptible to climate variability and contributes to existing power supply deficits affecting both industries and households.
Given Ethiopia’s status as one of the fastest-growing economies, the demand for sustainable and high-quality electricity is escalating rapidly. “No single existing source in our current energy mix can meet this scale of demand,” Debebe stated, underscoring the strategic importance of nuclear power in the nation’s long-term energy strategy.
Ethiopian Nuclear Energy Commission: A Regulatory and Development Body
Established in October 2025, the Ethiopian Nuclear Energy Commission is mandated to oversee the peaceful application of nuclear technology within the country. Its responsibilities encompass the development of nuclear power for electricity generation, as well as supporting industrial advancement, food security, healthcare improvements, and scientific research endeavors.
Debebe asserted that Ethiopia is committed to the exclusively peaceful utilization of nuclear technology, operating under a well-defined legal framework and a robust decision-making structure.
Beyond Electricity Generation: A Holistic Approach
Ethiopia’s vision for nuclear technology extends beyond electricity generation, encompassing its peaceful application in healthcare, agriculture, industry, and research to benefit all Ethiopians.
- Healthcare: Nuclear medicine offers advanced diagnostic and therapeutic techniques for various diseases.
- Agriculture: Nuclear techniques can improve crop yields, manage pests, and enhance water resource management.
- Industry: Nuclear technology can be applied in various industrial processes, including non-destructive testing and process optimization.
- Research: Nuclear research contributes to scientific advancement and innovation across multiple fields.
Ethiopia is aligning its national framework with IAEA standards and adhering to all relevant international treaties and obligations, demonstrating its commitment to a safe, secure, and lawful nuclear program.
IAEA’s Support and Endorsement
International Atomic Energy Agency Director General Rafael Mariano Grossi, in a webinar address, lauded the establishment of the Ethiopian Nuclear Energy Commission as crucial for developing and regulating nuclear power in accordance with international safety and security standards.
Grossi emphasized the potential of nuclear energy as a reliable, quick, and low-carbon electricity source that could significantly accelerate Ethiopia’s socio-economic transformation. He also noted that the initiative could stimulate industrial growth and create high-skilled employment opportunities.
The IAEA has pledged its full support to Ethiopia, offering advisory and capacity-building services at every stage of its nuclear development program. The Agency is currently collaborating with Ethiopia under its Technical Cooperation Programme to strengthen human resources, institutional capacity, and preparedness for future infrastructure milestones.
Ensuring Safety and Sustainable Development
The Ethiopian Nuclear Energy Commission is committed to ensuring that all nuclear-related activities comply with international safety standards, particularly those established by the IAEA.
One of the Commission’s key functions is to guide the application of nuclear technology across critical sectors, with a strong emphasis on sustainable development. It will coordinate national efforts in electricity generation, industrial growth, food security, healthcare services, and scientific research to ensure the safe and responsible use of nuclear technology for national development.
Mega Nuclear Power Plant: A Key Component of National Development
The construction of a mega nuclear power plant, part of the USD 30 billion mega development initiatives recently announced, is aimed at strengthening Ethiopia’s energy security and supporting industrial transformation. This project signifies Ethiopia’s commitment to leveraging nuclear technology as a cornerstone of its future economic growth.
