NFF President Dismisses Claims of Squad Influence Ahead of AFCON
The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) President, Ibrahim Gusau, has vehemently refuted allegations that the federation interfered with the final selection of the Super Eagles squad for the upcoming Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON). Head coach Eric Chelle recently finalized his 28-player roster, trimming down an initial provisional list of 54, a decision that has reportedly sparked some controversy and accusations of external influence.
Gusau addressed these claims directly, urging caution against unsubstantiated rumours circulating, particularly on social media platforms. He described the online environment as “highly polluted” and acknowledged the significant presence of football agents, which he believes contributes to the spread of misinformation.
“People should be careful about what is going on, especially on social media,” Gusau stated. “The environment is highly polluted. A lot of agents are everywhere.” He went on to emphasize his commitment to maintaining the integrity of the selection process. “I will never tell a coach to pick this player or that player. I have never stayed in one hotel with the national team since I became the President. I don’t want to be a distraction.”
This strong denial comes as the Super Eagles prepare for their continental campaign, with the final squad featuring a blend of familiar faces and new talent.
Key Squad Dynamics and Notable Inclusions
The finalized 28-man squad sees the introduction of ten new players compared to the team that reached the final of the 2023 AFCON. Among the fresh faces are defenders Ryan Alebiosu and Igoh Ogbu, midfielders Ebenezer Akinsanmiro, Usman Muhammed, and Tochukwu Nnadi, and forward Salim Fago Lawal. Their inclusion signals a potential shift in team dynamics and a look towards future development.
However, the squad also features notable absences that have drawn attention. Nottingham Forest defender Ola Aina, who was a standout performer for Nigeria in the previous tournament, will not be participating. Similarly, retired captain William Troost-Ekong and the injured defender Benjamin Fredrick have been excluded. These omissions, while perhaps due to various factors including form and fitness, are likely to be keenly felt.
Despite these changes, the core of the team that showcased its capabilities in the last AFCON remains intact. Key players retained include Calvin Bassey, who steps into leadership following Troost-Ekong’s retirement, along with Semi Ajayi, Alex Iwobi, Wilfred Ndidi, Frank Onyeka, Ademola Lookman, Samuel Chukwueze, Moses Simon, and the prolific Victor Osimhen.
Adding to the attacking options, Trabzonspor striker Paul Onuachu makes a return to the national team fold after an absence of over a year. Panathinaikos forward Cyriel Dessers also retains his place, despite facing some recent scrutiny regarding his current form.
Pre-AFCON Preparations Underway
In preparation for the demanding AFCON tournament, the Super Eagles are scheduled to hold a training camp in Egypt. This camp will serve as a crucial period for team cohesion and tactical refinement. As part of their build-up, the Nigerian contingent is expected to participate in an unofficial friendly match against the Egyptian national team, the Pharaohs, on December 16. This encounter will provide a valuable test against a strong continental opponent before the official start of the competition. The NFF’s commitment to providing the best possible environment for the team’s success is evident in these preparatory arrangements.
