A Unique Alliance Between Two Controversial Figures
In a surprising development that has sparked widespread discussion, Elon Musk and Tommy Robinson have once again found themselves in the public eye. This time, it’s not just for their individual stances on various issues but for a rather unusual collaboration. The world’s richest man is reportedly covering the legal expenses of Robinson as he faces trial for refusing to provide his phone’s PIN during a traffic stop under counter-terrorism laws.
The incident occurred when an officer stopped Robinson while he was driving through the Channel Tunnel train terminal in a silver Bentley belonging to a friend. He mentioned he was heading to Benidorm, a Spanish resort town, but the officer became suspicious due to his vague responses. Robinson, whose real name is Stephen Yaxley-Lennon, refused to hand over his mobile phone because it contained ‘journalistic material,’ according to court proceedings.
Robinson, who denies failing to comply with counter-terrorism powers, expressed gratitude in a video recorded before entering court today. He said, “Thankfully, I haven’t had to beg for donations today because Elon Musk has picked up the legal bill for this absolute state persecution.”
A History of Connection
While their partnership may seem unexpected to many, it is not the first time that Musk has been linked with Robinson. Their initial public interaction took place in November 2023, a year after Musk took over X, previously known as Twitter. Robinson had been banned from the platform in 2018 for ‘hateful conduct’ due to posts that were deemed Islamophobic.
Upon returning to the site, Robinson thanked Musk for reinstating his account. He wrote, “I’ve been censored, attacked, slandered and imprisoned for shining a light on uncomfortable truths that our government wish to hide, the public are now aware I was telling the truth.” This move significantly boosted Robinson’s profile and contributed to the spread of far-right ideology, as noted by hate speech monitoring groups.
Musk’s Support for Robinson
By August 2024, Musk began amplifying Robinson’s posts amid concerns that misinformation had led to anti-immigration riots in the UK. In January this year, Musk expressed his opinion on British politics, questioning why Robinson was in solitary confinement for telling the truth. He posted, “Free Tommy Robinson!” on X the following day and later added, “Once again: FREE TOMMY ROBINSON NOW.”
At the time, Robinson was in prison after being convicted of defying a court order by repeating false claims about a teenage Syrian refugee who had sued him for libel. Musk pinned a post calling for Robinson’s release at the top of his account, which had over 210 million followers, while reposting multiple calls for his release.
A Divided Far-Right Movement
Musk’s support for Robinson created some tension within the far-right movement. Nigel Farage, another prominent figure, felt like a third wheel. Farage has long had his anti-immigrant views bolstered by Musk, all while making pilgrimages from Clacton, Essex, to Donald Trump’s estate in Mar-a-Lago.
On the same day Musk questioned Robinson’s jail sentence, he posted on X that “only Reform can save Britain,” referring to Farage’s political party. However, unlike Musk, the Clacton-on-Sea MP refused to call for the release of Robinson, stating at a conference in January, “I never wanted Tommy Robinson to join UKIP, I don’t want him to join Reform UK, and he won’t be.”
Public Appearance and Criticism
Although Musk and Robinson have posted about each other, they have not met in person publicly. However, Musk did make an appearance at one of Robinson’s nationalist protests last month via video uplink. He told a crowd of flag-waving protesters that “violence is coming” and “you either fight back or you die.” These comments were criticized by politicians, including Farage, who asked for clarification on what Musk meant by ‘fight.’
Is Musk Really Paying for Legal Fees?
Despite the speculation, Musk has not publicly confirmed that he is covering Robinson’s legal expenses. The tech mogul has been approached for comment.
