Special Tactical Squad Apprehends 22 Suspects in Nationwide Security Crackdown
Across several states, a series of intelligence-driven operations by the Special Tactical Squad (STS) has resulted in the significant arrest of 22 individuals. The successful raids have also led to the recovery of a substantial cache of illegal firearms, stolen vehicles, motorcycles, illicit narcotics, and other evidence directly linked to criminal activities.
The apprehended suspects face a range of serious charges, including armed robbery, kidnapping, banditry, cattle rustling, vehicle theft, economic sabotage, impersonation, and drug trafficking. The Force Public Relations Officer, CSP Benjamin Hundeyin, confirmed the details of the extensive operations, highlighting the diverse nature of the criminal enterprises targeted.
Key Recoveries and Arrests
The operations yielded a significant amount of weaponry and other incriminating items. Among the recovered firearms were:
- One LAR rifle
- One pump-action gun
- One AK-49 rifle
- One AK-47 rifle
- One SMG rifle
In addition to these firearms, two live rounds of ammunition were also seized. Beyond the weapons, the STS recovered 45 other exhibits. These included various vehicles, motorcycles, illicit drugs, and numerous items believed to be instruments of crime.
Notable Operations and Suspect Apprehensions
Several specific operations underscore the scope and success of the STS crackdown:
Kaduna–Abuja Expressway Interception: In a major bust along the Kaduna–Abuja Expressway, STS operatives intercepted a J5 vehicle. The vehicle was found to be transporting 13 brand-new motorcycles, along with weapons and other incriminating materials. This led to the subsequent arrest of a 35-year-old suspect, identified as Luke Ifeanyi, who is implicated in cases of armed robbery and economic sabotage.
Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Operations: Within the FCT, operations led to the apprehension of Ayo Abiodun, an escapee from the Kuje Custodial Centre. Abiodun is suspected of robbing a serving Nigerian Army officer.
Impersonation and Stolen Property: In a separate incident, a 40-year-old suspect named Yusuf Shehu was arrested in possession of a stolen tricycle. Police investigations revealed that Shehu was impersonating a police officer, with a police mobile uniform and a police identity card recovered from his possession.
Drug Trafficking Bust: STS operatives also intercepted a vehicle carrying substantial quantities of leaves suspected to be cannabis and other controlled substances, indicating a significant drug trafficking ring being disrupted.
Edo State Arrests: In Edo State, four individuals were apprehended for the unlawful possession of prohibited firearms and for their alleged involvement in violent attacks against a local community.
Lagos and Ogun States Syndicate Disruption: Two suspects linked to a car-snatching syndicate were arrested in Lagos and Ogun States, marking a blow to organized vehicle theft in the region.
Nasarawa and Neighboring States Sweep: A large contingent of 12 suspects connected to banditry, kidnapping, and cattle rustling were arrested in Nasarawa and its surrounding states. Several firearms were recovered during these coordinated efforts.
Ongoing Investigations and Commitment to Justice
Authorities have stated that investigations into all these cases are actively ongoing. Upon the conclusion of these investigations, the arrested suspects will face prosecution in court in accordance with existing laws.
The Inspector-General of Police, IGP Kayode Egbetokun, commended the Special Tactical Squad for their bravery and professional conduct. He emphasized that these successes are a testament to the Force’s unwavering commitment to safeguarding lives and property, dismantling criminal networks, and ensuring the overall safety of the public. The IGP further urged the public to continue providing valuable and credible information to assist the police in their ongoing fight against crime.
