Paul Merson Astounded by Arsenal’s Phenomenal Star

Paul Merson has praised Arsenal as an “efficient machine” following their routine Premier League victory over Burnley. The win marked their fifth consecutive league triumph and extended their unbeaten run in all competitions to nine matches.

In the first half, goals from Viktor Gyokeres and Declan Rice secured a comfortable 2-0 victory for Arsenal at Turf Moor. This result not only solidified their position at the top of the Premier League table but also kept them seven points ahead of second-placed Bournemouth before their upcoming clash with Manchester City.

Mikel Arteta’s team has been exceptional this season, conceding only three goals in the process. Their clean sheet against Burnley was their seventh in a row, just one away from the club’s all-time record.

Merson described Arsenal’s current form as “not a good cocktail” for other title contenders, stating that they “look unbeatable.” He highlighted the team’s defensive solidity, noting that Burnley never looked like scoring except for a free-kick that hit the post near the end of the game.

  • The defense is so effective that every ball into the box is cleared.
  • The two defenders are committed to stopping attacks, while the full-backs focus on preventing crosses.
  • The team’s overall structure is tight, making it difficult for opponents to create chances.

Declan Rice was singled out for special praise by Merson, who called his performance against Burnley “phenomenal.” He added:

  • “At the moment, Arsenal look unbeatable.”
  • “They defend so well. Apart from the free-kick that hit the post with the last kick, Burnley never looked like scoring.”
  • “Everything that comes into the box is cleared. They head everything and they have two defenders that want to defend, and two full backs that want to stop crosses.”
  • “Then there’s Declan Rice. He wouldn’t have been far off a 10 out of 10 against Burnley. He just doesn’t stop all game. It was a phenomenal performance.”

Merson also expressed concern about the impact of Gyokeres’ early exit during the match. He noted that Arsenal looked like a completely different side after the forward was forced off.

  • Mikel Merino came on and helped maintain possession, but the team struggled to create meaningful chances in the second half.
  • Despite this, Merson acknowledged that Arsenal is currently a “well-oiled machine” with a lot of talent.
  • “That is very unusual,” he said, adding that “they are an efficient machine but have so much talent. That is not a good cocktail for everyone else.”

Arteta was equally impressed with his team’s performance, calling the first half “exceptional.” He praised the team’s ability to score and remain defensively strong.

  • “We scored two goals and gave nothing away, so that was the platform.”
  • “We had to make a few changes and didn’t have that much control in the second half. Our defending was exceptional again, we didn’t give anything away.”
  • “There is a reason they [Burnley] have lost one game [at home] in 18 months, and that was against Liverpool in the last second of the game.”

Meanwhile, Burnley’s defeat leaves them in 17th place in the Premier League, just four points above the relegation zone. Their next match will be against struggling West Ham, while Sunderland will face Arsenal in their next fixture.

As Arsenal continues their title charge, fans can look forward to more exciting performances from a team that is proving to be one of the most formidable in the league.
