If the idea of putting your life on the line every day at work sounds stressful, it’s easy to see why some might reach for a drink to unwind. However, for Nabil Elouahabi, who plays veteran explosives officer Hassan ‘Hass’ Rahim in the popular ITV drama Trigger Point, staying sober was an essential choice.
‘I’m sober,’ Nabil shared during an interview. ‘That was something I wanted to incorporate into the character. Being sober and in recovery is part of my life. I love it, and it’s a better way to live, for me, as simple as that.’
Nabil explained that he felt strongly about making his character abstain from alcohol, especially given the intense nature of the role. ‘There was a big pub scene [in the show], they were all doing shots, and I thought, I want to unpack something different without making a song and dance about it. There are lots of people who don’t drink… personally, it got to the point where I just didn’t want to drink anymore because it was causing me more harm than good.’
His decision to make Hass a sober character was also influenced by his strong working relationship with Vicky McClure, the lead actor and executive producer of the show.
The two have been working together for the last three years, and Nabil has always spoken highly of her. ‘Vicky is an example of a number one,’ he said. ‘She always checked on everybody. Not just the actors, but all departments. She cares, actually cares. I think that’s informed by her working-class roots.’
While Nabil admires Vicky’s dedication, he also admits she has her own quirks. According to him, one of her biggest weaknesses is a love for Greggs pastries. ‘She is insane about Greggs,’ he laughed when asked about the rumors of her buying the cast and crew Greggs. ‘She’s addicted. I’m sure she owns it and hasn’t told us.’

Nabil emphasized that Vicky’s generosity and kindness set the tone for the entire production. ‘The main thing about Vicky is her generosity of spirit,’ he said. ‘It sets the tone.’
So, what makes Trigger Point stand out? Nabil, who has worked on many shows over the years, says this one is unique. ‘What’s come out of this is the excitement of being on a good job, being one of the main cast, and the third part is when you have a group of people who share your value system. There are no divas.’
This collaborative atmosphere is crucial, especially as the show tackles a new and intense storyline this season. The Explosive Ordnance Disposal Unit faces a mysterious bombing campaign that threatens to bring London to its knees. Can they stop the bomber before it’s too late?
