Doyle’s Awkward Expletive Outburst

The unpredictable nature of live television often throws up unexpected moments, and TNT Sports presenter Craig Doyle found himself on the receiving end of a rather blunt critique during a recent Gallagher Premiership Rugby fixture. The incident occurred while Doyle was covering the highly anticipated clash between Gloucester and Leicester Tigers, part of the Premiership’s “Big Match Bonanza Weekend,” which was being held at Villa Park in Birmingham.

This special weekend saw several high-profile matches take place across different venues. Alongside the Gloucester vs. Leicester Tigers game at Aston Villa’s home ground, the Bristol Bears took on Harlequins at the Principality Stadium in Cardiff, and Saracens faced Northampton Saints at the iconic Tottenham Hotspur Stadium in London.

In Birmingham, the Leicester Tigers made an explosive start to their encounter with Gloucester. They wasted no time in establishing dominance, securing the try bonus point within the opening 15 minutes of the match. Their early scoring spree was spearheaded by tries from Will Wand, Gabe Hamer-Webb, and a brace from Jamie Blamire, leaving Gloucester with a mountain to climb.

While Gloucester managed to claw their way back into the game with a try from Matias Alemanno, Leicester’s grip on the match was further solidified just before halftime. Orlando Bailey’s try just before the break gave the Tigers a commanding 29-5 lead, with a full half of rugby still to be played.

The first half performance would have undoubtedly left Gloucester feeling disheartened. Despite managing to score a couple more tries in the second half, their efforts proved insufficient, and they ultimately succumbed to a 36-17 defeat. This loss left Gloucester languishing in 8th position in the Premiership standings.

From the Leicester Tigers’ perspective, Head Coach Geoff Parling would have been pleased with his team’s dominant performance on the field. However, his mood took a sharp turn off the pitch, as he was visibly irked by some pre-match antics involving Craig Doyle.

Prior to the game, Doyle, alongside fellow TNT Sports presenter Liam McDevitt, was engaging in some light-hearted entertainment for the crowd. Doyle had persuaded McDevitt to attempt a penalty kick from a wide position. The kick, however, went astray, narrowly missing the Leicester Tigers players who were in the midst of their pre-match warm-ups.

Upon witnessing this near-miss, Leicester’s Head Coach, Geoff Parling, swiftly approached the presenters. Doyle, attempting to lighten the mood, jokingly enquired if Parling would consider signing McDevitt up for the Tigers. This jest, however, did not land well with the former England international. Parling’s response was far from pleased, and he reportedly used a rather colourful expletive to convey his strong disapproval and dismiss the pair’s actions, indicating exactly where he felt their pre-match entertainment should be directed. The moment served as a stark reminder that even in a relaxed pre-game environment, the focus remains on the serious business of professional rugby.
