Egbaland Celebrates Monarch’s Milestone with Youth Squash Championship
The esteemed Royalty Club of Egbaland (RCE) recently orchestrated a vibrant junior squash championship, a key event marking the 20th coronation anniversary of the Alake and Paramount Ruler of Egbaland, Oba Adedotun Gbadebo. This significant celebration underscored the monarch’s two decades of leadership and his profound passion for the sport of squash, bringing together young talent from across the South West region of Nigeria.
The two-day tournament unfolded across two prestigious venues: the RCE Squash Complex at Ake Palace and the Olusegun Obasanjo Presidential Library Squash Complex, both located in Abeokuta. This competition was not an isolated event but rather a central component of a broader series of activities designed to honour Oba Gbadebo’s enduring reign.
The Genesis and Mission of the Royalty Club of Egbaland
Tunde Aregbesola, President of the RCE and the current Accountant General of Ogun State, elaborated on the club’s origins and its overarching objectives. Established eighteen years ago, the association, formerly known as the Ake Royalty Boys, was founded with a clear mandate: to foster social, cultural, and sporting development within Egbaland. A significant driving force behind its inception was Oba Gbadebo’s personal enthusiasm for squash, a sport he actively champions.
The RCE has a consistent track record of engaging with the community through squash. The club routinely organises the Ake Palace Squash Clinic, an initiative specifically aimed at nurturing young players. Furthermore, in a notable collaboration with the Ogun State Squash Association and the Nigerian Squash Federation, the RCE previously launched a dedicated Youth Squash Academy. This academy was established as a special tribute to mark the Alake’s 75th birthday, reflecting the club’s deep-seated commitment to youth development through sport.
“Oba Gbadebo has so much interest in squash and he encourages the young ones to play the game,” Aregbesola stated. “That is why RCE is giving the young ones a chance to excel in it.” This sentiment highlights the direct correlation between the monarch’s influence and the club’s proactive efforts in promoting squash among the youth.
A Collaborative Effort for Sporting Excellence
The recent junior squash championship was a testament to successful collaboration. The RCE partnered with Tokunbo Omisore, the founder of the Ajisewa Egba Foundation, to bring the event to fruition. Omisore described his involvement as a personal contribution to the advancement of sports not only in Egbaland but across Nigeria. His primary aspiration for the tournament was to identify and cultivate emerging squash talent, with the ultimate goal of grooming future champions capable of representing Ogun State and Nigeria on the international stage.
Dominance and Emerging Talent
The competition itself showcased a high level of skill and dedication from the young athletes. Players representing Ogun State demonstrated their prowess by clinching three out of the four titles available.
- Under-16 Girls Category: Elizabeth Adebayo, representing Ogun State, emerged victorious, defeating Chioma Ude from Lagos State in a closely contested final.
- Under-16 Boys Category: In the boys’ equivalent, Ayomide Omotayo, also from Ogun State, secured the title, triumphing over Peter Adeleke.
The Under-19 categories also witnessed thrilling encounters and strong performances:
- Under-19 Girls Category: Chioma Ude of Lagos faced another challenge in the final, ultimately being defeated by Awau Balogun from Ogun State.
- Under-19 Boys Category: The Lagos State contingent secured a victory in this category, with Quadri Yusuf emerging as the champion after defeating his fellow Lagosian, Joshua Daniel.
Dignitaries Witness the Future of Squash
The finals of the championship attracted a significant gathering of distinguished guests and dignitaries. Leading the esteemed assembly was Oba Gbadebo himself, accompanied by a delegation of senior Egba chiefs. Their presence underscored the importance of the event and their unwavering support for the young athletes and the sport of squash within Egbaland. The championship not only celebrated a royal milestone but also provided a crucial platform for the development and recognition of future sporting stars.
