This profound truth is echoed in the teachings of Apostle Paul, who exhorted the Galatians with timeless wisdom:
The Imperative to Do Good
Galatians 6:9-10 reminds us, “And let us not be weary in well doing: for in due season we shall reap, if we faint not. As we have therefore opportunity, let us do good unto all men, especially unto them who are of the household of faith.” This passage underscores a fundamental principle: persistent generosity, even when faced with challenges or perceived limitations, yields a harvest.
It is easy to fall into the trap of focusing on our own limited resources and finding excuses to withhold our support. The act of giving habitually might even feel arduous at its outset. However, the spiritual mandate for God’s people is to continuously radiate divine love by addressing human needs wherever and whenever possible. This commitment is not without its own profound incentives.
The Rewards of Generosity
The concept of reward for a life filled with love and giving is a recurring theme in scripture. The Psalmist David eloquently captured this sentiment in Psalms 126:6: “He that goeth forth and weepeth, bearing precious seed, shall doubtless come again with rejoicing, bringing his sheaves with him.” This imagery speaks of sowing seeds of kindness and compassion, which will inevitably return as a bountiful harvest of joy and fulfillment.
Our Lord Himself frequently spoke of the motivations and incentives for making sacrifices for the advancement of His kingdom. In Matthew 10:41, He stated, “He that receiveth a prophet in the name of a prophet shall receive a prophet’s reward; and he that receiveth a righteous man in the name of a righteous man shall receive a righteous man’s reward.” This highlights that acts of hospitality and support extended to those dedicated to righteous causes are met with commensurate blessings.
Furthermore, in Mark 9:41, Jesus assured, “For whosoever shall give you a cup of water to drink in my name, because ye belong to Christ, verily I say unto you, he shall not lose his reward.” This emphasizes that even the smallest act of kindness, performed with the right intention, is recognized and rewarded.
Perhaps the most direct and powerful promise regarding giving comes from Luke 6:38: “Give, and it shall be given unto you; good measure, pressed down, and shaken together, and running over, shall men give into your bosom. For with the same measure that ye mete withal, it shall be measured to you again.” These are not mere suggestions but divine assurances, affirming the faithful and true nature of His words.
Therefore, let us be encouraged to extend our love to those in need. Let us be inspired to give as if we are giving directly to the Lord, investing our resources and our efforts for the advancement of God’s kingdom, with the certainty of a handsome reward.
Principles of Meaningful Giving
The question then arises: how should we approach this act of giving, especially when it stems from a love for God? The scriptures offer guiding principles for our generosity:
- Give Willingly: True giving originates from a willing heart, uncoerced and ungrudging. Exodus 35:5 and 29 speak of the people bringing offerings with willing hearts.
- Give Cheerfully: The attitude with which we give is as important as the act itself. 2 Corinthians 9:7 encourages giving “not grudgingly, or of necessity: for God loveth a cheerful giver.”
- Give Copiously: When resources allow, generosity should not be stingy. Exodus 36:1-7 describes the people bringing more than enough for the work of the sanctuary.
- Give Promptly: Seizing opportunities to help as they arise demonstrates attentiveness to need and a readiness to act. Philippians 4:15 notes the Philippians’ timely support.
- Give Sacrificially: True giving often involves personal sacrifice, offering what is precious to us. 2 Samuel 24:24 illustrates King David’s willingness to give a costly sacrifice.
- Give Always: Generosity should not be a sporadic event but a consistent aspect of our lives. Ecclesiastes 11:6 and Galatians 6:10 encourage continuous well-doing.
- Give Lovingly: The underlying motivation for all giving should be love, mirroring God’s own boundless love for humanity. John 3:16 and 1 Corinthians 16:14 highlight the importance of love in our actions.
As the saying goes, “You can give without loving, but you cannot love without giving.” True love is inherently an active, outward expression.
