AFL Integrity Unit Probes St Kilda Player Over Alleged Homophobic Slur
The Australian Football League’s integrity unit has launched an investigation into a St Kilda player, Lance Collard, following allegations of a homophobic slur used during a VFL match between St Kilda and Frankston on Friday night. While official statements from the Saints, AFL, and VFL have refrained from naming the individual, they have confirmed that an inquiry is underway.
Sources close to the incident, speaking on condition of anonymity, have identified Collard as the player in question. Reports of the incident first emerged from Nine News and AFL.com.au.

In July 2024, he received a six-match suspension for using homophobic language towards Williamstown players in a VFL fixture. At the time, he issued an apology and voluntarily completed Pride in Sport training at his own expense.
When approached on Saturday night, Collard’s manager, Colin Young, was asked about media reports suggesting Collard had informed friends that he used the term “maggot” rather than a homophobic slur. Young responded, “That’s what I believe to be true.”
The St Kilda Football Club issued a statement on Saturday acknowledging the investigation. “The club takes matters of this nature extremely seriously and is working closely with the AFL integrity unit as it conducts its investigation into the matter,” the statement read. “While this process is underway, it would be inappropriate for the club to comment further.”
The AFL integrity unit’s investigation is anticipated to span several days.
Separate Incident Under Review
Adding to the scrutiny, a separate incident from the same VFL match is also under review by the VFL match review officer. This incident involves Collard allegedly collecting Frankston player Jackson Voss with a swinging arm after Voss had kicked the ball. The findings from the match review officer are expected to be released on Monday.
