Veteran’s Late-Night Hustle for Family Medical Bills Sparks Community Outpouring

A Vietnam War veteran, forced back into the workforce in his late seventies, has captured the hearts of a community after a late-night DoorDash delivery revealed the immense pressure he’s under to cover mounting medical expenses for his family. Larry Phillip Colvin, 76, a seasoned warrior who served his country, now finds himself navigating the demanding world of food delivery to make ends meet, a stark contrast to the retirement he had earned.

Colvin’s decision to return to work came after rising healthcare costs for his wife and son began to outpace his Social Security income. “I had to do something, and I can’t hold down a regular job,” he shared, his voice tinged with the weariness of his current circumstances.

The poignant reality of his situation came to light on the evening of March 14th, when he delivered an order to a home in Mabank, Texas, around 10:30 pm. Wearing a veteran’s cap, his identity as a service member was evident, but it was his presence delivering food at such a late hour that struck a chord with his customer, Savannah Saulters.

“There should be no reason that a 76-year-old man is delivering my pizza that late at night,” Saulters remarked, deeply moved by the encounter. Colvin explained to her that he had been compelled to return to work a decade after retiring, a difficult choice made to support his household as medical expenses continued to escalate.

Now, the veteran, who will celebrate his 77th birthday in May, dedicates most of his evenings to delivering food, with Wednesdays set aside for attending church services.

The driving force behind Colvin’s relentless work ethic is the critical health of his loved ones. His wife is facing the prospect of multiple surgeries, while his son is engaged in a challenging battle with several autoimmune diseases, including lupus and dystonia. These significant medical needs create a constant financial strain, pushing Colvin to work unconventional hours. “I wish I didn’t have to do it at night, but that’s when you make the most money,” he admitted, highlighting the economic realities that dictate his schedule.

The physical toll of this demanding work is not lost on his family. His daughter-in-law, Donna Colvin, expressed her concern, stating, “I think it’s very hard on him. I think he’s almost 77 years old, and it’s gotta take a toll somewhere.”

Witnessing Colvin’s dedication and the burden he carried, Saulters felt compelled to act. She initiated a GoFundMe campaign with the hope of alleviating his financial pressures and enabling him to finally cease his late-night deliveries. The response from the community was swift and overwhelming.

Within days, the fundraiser had garnered significant traction, raising more than $76,000. Saulters articulated the sentiment of many in her heartfelt appeal on the fundraising page. “Many in our community have met [Colvin] through their orders, and his kindness and dedication have left a lasting impression,” she wrote. “No parent should have to choose between earning a living and being there for their sick child.”

She continued, “That’s why I’m starting this fundraiser – to help this devoted father take time off from DoorDash so he can focus on what matters most: Caring for his son. The funds raised will give him the breathing room he needs to be present for his family during this difficult time, without the added stress of late-night shifts.”

Colvin expressed his profound gratitude and astonishment at the generosity of strangers. He acknowledged that the substantial sum raised will provide immense relief. “I say, ‘God bless that lady,'” Larry Colvin stated, his voice filled with emotion. “I’m very grateful. It’ll help pay off some bills.” The community’s collective effort has offered a lifeline, allowing this dedicated veteran to potentially reclaim his retirement and focus on his family’s well-being.
