A Town Reclaims Its Identity in the Face of War
In a small town located on the edge of the frontline in eastern Ukraine, the name “New York” has made a surprising return. Once known as Novgorodske, this settlement has reverted to its original name, Niu-York or New York, as a bold act of defiance against the looming threat of Russian invasion. This decision highlights the resilience of the local community in the face of ongoing conflict.
The town, which was originally named “new city” in Ukrainian, had its unique heritage stripped away by Soviet officials in 1951. For decades, it bore the name Novgorodske, but now, the people of New York are reclaiming their past. The origins of the name remain a mystery, with some suggesting it may have been influenced by German settlers in the 1800s. However, for many, the name now symbolizes resistance against the overwhelming forces surrounding Ukraine.
A Town Under Siege
Despite the symbolic significance of the name, life in New York is anything but easy. The war-torn settlement has endured years of conflict, with Ukrainian forces continuously battling Russian-backed separatists near the border. The town has witnessed frequent shelling, and the sounds of explosions echo through its empty streets.
Tetyana Krasko, head of the New York Cultural Centre, acknowledges the gravity of the situation. “It’s not funny,” she says, reflecting on the recent attacks. “New York has already suffered.”
The impact of the conflict is evident in the lives of the townspeople. Over 14,000 lives have been lost in the Donbas region, and more than 1.5 million people have been displaced. Once home to over 10,000 residents, New York now faces an uncertain future, with many homes left vacant.
Life in a War-Torn Town
Ella Pylypenko, a housewife from the settlement, describes the challenges of living in such a difficult environment. “Living here is very difficult,” she explains. “There is nowhere to work, the wages are low, and there are these bombings. It’s not easy to live here.”
The situation is further complicated by the recent recognition of Donetsk, a Russian-backed separatist stronghold, by President Vladimir Putin. This decision has sparked international outrage, but for many locals, it was not entirely unexpected.
Klava Blynska, an elderly resident, expresses her frustration. “They are idiots,” she shouts from her balcony. “Why did they make this decision? What’s the point?”
The Future of New York
Some residents believe that the town’s name could change again if Russian forces continue to advance into Ukraine. However, for many younger residents, the priority is not renaming the town but finding a way to leave.
Sergei, a local college student, reflects on his future. “We’ll grow up and maybe we can leave here,” he says. “I don’t know if it makes sense to stay here any longer. I don’t know how long the war will last. So we’ll have to get out of New York soon.”
As the conflict continues, the people of New York remain determined to preserve their identity, even as the future remains uncertain.
