Manchester United Legend Among Contenders for Wolves Manager Role
A former Manchester United legend is reportedly in the running to become the new manager of Wolverhampton Wanderers following the sacking of Vitor Pereira on Sunday. Pereira became the fourth Premier League manager to lose his job this season, as Wolves remain at the bottom of the table and have yet to secure a win in their first 10 matches.
With the club currently in the relegation zone, they are now searching for a new head coach who can help them avoid the drop. This task has become more challenging after their main relegation rivals, West Ham, defeated Newcastle United 3-1 in a crucial match.
Among the names being discussed are Brendan Rodgers, who recently stepped down from his role at Celtic, and former Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag. However, reports suggest that these two are not under serious consideration. Instead, The Athletic has revealed that Wolves are surprisingly considering rehiring Gary O’Neil, the man who replaced Pereira just under a year ago.
Other potential candidates include Middlesbrough boss Rob Edwards and Michael Carrick, who is currently without a job after being dismissed by Boro last summer. Carrick was let go after failing to achieve promotion to the Premier League during his three-year tenure at the club. He had also been linked with the Wolves job before Danny Rohl was appointed.

Carrick’s only managerial role so far has been at Middlesbrough, although he has been part of the coaching staff at Manchester United under Jose Mourinho and Ole Gunnar Solskjaer. He even served as caretaker manager briefly after Solskjaer was sacked in 2021.
Known as one of the best midfielders of his generation, Carrick enjoyed a highly successful 12-year career at United, winning five Premier League titles and the Champions League. Despite his impressive playing record, his managerial experience is limited.
Wolves’ management is said to hold both Carrick and Edwards in high regard. However, it would be difficult to appoint Edwards, as he is still under contract at Middlesbrough until 2028. According to BBC Sport, neither Carrick nor Edwards have been contacted by Wolves yet.

Like Carrick, O’Neil is currently a free agent. He performed well during his only full season as a manager but was eventually dismissed after earning just six points from 19 matches in the 2024/25 season.
Wolves are not expected to announce a new manager before their upcoming Premier League match against Chelsea on Saturday.
