Britain’s Got Talent Under Fire After Controversial Rule Change and Golden Buzzer Decision

The latest installment of Britain’s Got Talent has sparked a significant backlash from viewers, with a dramatic rule alteration and a controversial Golden Buzzer choice dominating discussions online. The beloved talent show, known for its high stakes and emotional moments, found itself at the centre of a storm as a perceived bending of the rules allowed an act to progress despite failing to secure the required number of judge approvals.

Traditionally, contestants on Britain’s Got Talent must receive at least three ‘yes’ votes from the judging panel – comprised of Simon Cowell, Amanda Holden, Alesha Dixon, and KSI – to advance to the next stage of the competition. This ensures a majority decision and a clear indication of widespread approval. However, during a recent episode, this established protocol was seemingly bypassed at the eleventh hour, leading to accusations of favouritism and a disregard for the show’s own format.

The act in question was MC Tazo, a 43-year-old gas engineer from Newcastle, whose real name is Kevin. He took to the stage with palpable enthusiasm, having been introduced by hosts Ant McPartlin and Declan Donnelly, who shared his excitement. Kevin explained that his eight-year-old and 12-year-old children were in the audience, adding to the personal stakes of his performance.

As the music kicked in, Kevin launched into an energetic rap routine, designed to hype up the crowd and encourage audience participation. He called for everyone to raise their hands and engaged the audience with call-and-response prompts. Even KSI, the boxer-turned-YouTuber judge, was seen grooving along to the performance, getting out of his seat and visibly enjoying the spectacle.

Despite the infectious energy, the judges’ reactions were divided. KSI was effusive in his praise, declaring it “an absolute banger” and “great vibes,” awarding an easy ‘yes’. Simon Cowell also expressed his enjoyment, stating, “That was fun… I think people are gonna like you. So I will say yes.” This put Kevin at two ‘yes’ votes.

However, the momentum stalled with Amanda Holden, who, while finding Kevin “lovely,” was not convinced by his song, stating, “the song was not.” Alesha Dixon, after a moment of consideration and some boos from the audience, also delivered a ‘no’, citing that the performance was “slightly out of time.”

With Kevin needing three ‘yeses’, the situation appeared grim. It was at this point that hosts Ant and Dec intervened, rushing onto the stage. They directly appealed to the judges, with Ant asking, “Can we just give a yes? That’s three yeses.” The audience, seemingly on the side of the performer, responded positively.

Simon Cowell then announced a surprising shift: “OK, right. We’ve changed the rules.” He clarified that with his and KSI’s two ‘yeses’, and the hosts’ apparent support, Kevin had secured four ‘yeses’ and would advance. Ant and Dec celebrated their intervention, hugging a relieved Kevin.

This apparent rule change did not sit well with a significant portion of the viewing public. Social media platforms, particularly X (formerly Twitter), were flooded with criticism.

  • “Make up the rules as we go along on [show name],” fumed one user, @wonderthunder13, highlighting the perceived inconsistency.
  • Another viewer, @rozlaws, questioned the actual talent displayed, stating, “So what ‘talent’ are Ant and Dec such fans of? I’ve got a headache.”
  • @SamFarmer2 echoed this sentiment, acknowledging Kevin as a “nice guy” but deeming his act “terrible” and not worthy of a format alteration.
  • @Anthony08876880 pointed out the anomaly: “2 ‘yes votes’ and still through by a new rule.”
  • @MaddDeb even confessed to switching off the show, remarking, “turned over after tuning in ‘for the first time in years tonight’.”

This was not the only instance where Ant and Dec’s actions drew viewer ire during the episode. Earlier, they had used their Golden Buzzer on comedian Ted Hill. The Golden Buzzer is a powerful tool, allowing each judge and the hosts to send an act directly to the semi-finals, bypassing the usual judging process. While intended to highlight exceptional talent, Ted Hill’s performance was also met with mixed reactions.

Many viewers felt Ted was “not funny” and questioned the judges’ enthusiastic response.

  • @islandofangels expressed bewilderment: “l must be watching something else because l didn’t find Ted Hill funny at all. I don’t get what the judges were in hysterics about and for Ant and Dec to give him their golden buzzer??? I have lost the plot with this programme now.”
  • @RyanSoapKing25 agreed, stating the performer “wasn’t that good.”

However, Ted Hill’s audition also garnered strong support, particularly from those who appreciated his unique approach. Ted, who is autistic, incorporated his experiences and perspectives into his comedy, using his autism as inspiration for jokes about his love for graphs and data.

Supporters defended the Golden Buzzer decision by emphasising the hosts’ personal connection to the act.

  • @peraltasbearcam argued, “Ant and Dec personally found him funny and the whole point of the golden buzzer is that they can let whoever they enjoy through, thats what its for. Gross that some people are using this to be ableist.”

The judges themselves praised Ted’s act as “so unique” and “brilliant.” Online, many neurodivergent individuals and others hailed him as “one of the most creative acts I’ve ever seen” and “good at what he does.”

Despite the controversy, Britain’s Got Talent continues its run, with the next episode scheduled for Saturday on ITV1 and ITVX. The recent events, however, have undoubtedly sparked a debate about the show’s integrity and the application of its rules.
