Dramatic Finish in New York City Marathon

The New York City Marathon witnessed a thrilling conclusion as Benson Kipruto narrowly edged out fellow Kenyan Alexander Mutiso Munyao in a heart-stopping photo finish. Hellen Obiri, another Kenyan runner, made history by setting a new course record in the women’s race.

Obiri, who previously won the marathon in 2023, completed the race in 2 hours, 19 minutes, and 51 seconds. Both Kipruto and Mutiso Munyao finished with a time of 2:08.09. The two Kenyans took control of the race early on, separating themselves from the rest of the pack as they approached Mile 24. Kipruto seemed to have secured his victory when he pulled ahead in the final 200 meters. However, Mutiso Munyao made a last-ditch effort in the final 50 meters, only to fall just short by less than 0.2 seconds.

Albert Korir, the 2021 champion, came in third, completing a Kenyan sweep of the top three positions in both the men’s and women’s races. Joel Reichow was the highest-placed American, finishing sixth.

Eliud Kipchoge, who will turn 41 next week, participated in the New York City Marathon for the first time. Despite not winning, his performance marked a significant moment in his legendary career. He finished in 17th place, showcasing his continued dominance in the sport.

In the women’s race, Obiri ran alongside 2022 winner Sharon Lokedi until she pulled away in the final mile. She surged ahead and claimed an easy victory. The previous course record was 2:22.31, set by Margaret Okayo in 2003. Defending champion Sheila Chepkirui finished third, and all three women beat the previous course best.

The trio of former champions separated themselves heading into the Bronx at Mile 20. American Fiona O’Keeffe and Dutch runner Sifan Hassan had formed a group of five earlier in the race but couldn’t maintain their pace for the final six miles. This was the first time since 2018 that the previous three women’s winners were in the same race, and they delivered stellar performances. It was the second consecutive year that Kenyans occupied the top three spots.

O’Keeffe finished fourth, with fellow American Annie Frisbie in fifth. Hassan, who recently won the Sydney Marathon, came in next. Four of the top nine finishers were Americans.

The Course and Historical Significance

The 26.2-mile course took runners through all five boroughs of New York, starting in Staten Island and ending in Manhattan’s Central Park. This marks the 49th year that the race has covered all five boroughs. Before this, the route was entirely within Central Park. The first race had only 55 finishers, while last year saw a record 55,642 participants, making it the largest in the history of the sport until the London Marathon surpassed it earlier this year.
