Ethiopia Embarks on Nuclear Energy Program to Meet Growing Demands

Ethiopia has officially launched its Nuclear Power Programme, marking a significant step towards diversifying its energy sources and meeting the country’s escalating energy demands. The announcement was made at a high-level event held in Addis Ababa, bringing together prominent figures in the energy sector and government officials.

The initiative is spearheaded by the Ethiopian government, with the Ethiopian Nuclear Energy Commission (ENPC) playing a pivotal role in overseeing the development and implementation of the program. The launch event saw the participation of Foreign Minister Gedion Timothewos, Ethiopian Nuclear Energy Commissioner Sandokan Debebe, and Mikhail Chudakov, Deputy Director General and Head of the Department of Nuclear Energy at the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), alongside other senior government officials and stakeholders.

A Pillar for Future Energy Needs

Foreign Minister Gedion Timothewos emphasized that the establishment of a nuclear energy project is a cornerstone for Ethiopia to satisfy its current and future energy needs. He highlighted the government’s vision to provide every household with access to clean, reliable, and affordable electricity.

“Our vision is to build a nation where every household has access to clean, reliable, and affordable electricity,” he stated, underscoring the importance of modernizing Ethiopia’s energy infrastructure to support emerging technologies such as artificial intelligence and quantum computing, which require substantial power supplies.

Addressing the Energy Demands of a Growing Economy

The demand for electricity is projected to surge in the coming years, particularly with the growth of data centers, which are expected to double their electricity consumption by 2030. Recognizing the environmental impact of fossil fuels, Ethiopia is turning to nuclear technology as a sustainable and long-term solution.

“As a rapidly growing economy, strategic investments are needed to meet our long-term energy requirements,” Gedion noted. He further asserted that nuclear power has the potential to accelerate urbanization and industrialization across the nation, paving the way for a brighter future powered by clean energy.

The Ethiopian Nuclear Energy Commission (ENPC)

To realize its nuclear ambitions, the Ethiopian government established the Ethiopian Nuclear Energy Commission (ENPC) in October 2025. The ENPC serves as the central institutional body for developing and implementing Ethiopia’s nuclear program. Its primary mandate includes:

  • Developing Nuclear Power for Electricity Generation: The ENPC is responsible for overseeing the development of nuclear power plants to boost electricity production.

  • Supporting Industrial Growth: Nuclear technology is expected to play a role in supporting various industries, contributing to economic development.

  • Enhancing Food Security: The ENPC will explore the application of nuclear technology in agriculture to improve crop yields and food security.

  • Improving Healthcare Delivery: Nuclear medicine and related technologies will be utilized to enhance healthcare services.

  • Advancing Scientific Research: The commission will promote scientific research and development in the field of nuclear technology.

The ENPC is committed to ensuring that all nuclear-related activities adhere to the highest international safety standards, particularly those set by the IAEA. A key function of the ENPC is to guide the application of nuclear technology across various sectors, emphasizing sustainable development.

Collaboration with the IAEA

Ethiopia is working closely with the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) to ensure the safe and transparent development of its nuclear program. The IAEA has been providing advisory support for the application of nuclear technology, helping Ethiopia to establish a robust regulatory framework and build the necessary infrastructure.

Gedion expressed Ethiopia’s aspiration to become a leading center of excellence in Africa in the field of nuclear technology, inspiring other nations to pursue similar initiatives.

Overcoming Challenges and Realizing Ambitions

Reflecting on Ethiopia’s historical challenges, Gedion drew parallels between the launch of Ethiopian Airlines and the current nuclear ambition. “Just as the launch of Ethiopian Airlines once seemed ambitious, so too is our nuclear ambition today. With resolve and determination, we will realize our dreams of a nuclear-powered Ethiopia.”

Mega Project to Boost Energy Security

The construction of a mega nuclear power plant is part of the $30 billion mega-development initiatives recently announced by Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed. This project aims to bolster Ethiopia’s energy security and support its industrial transformation. The ENPC will coordinate national efforts in critical areas, including electricity generation, industrial development, food security, health services, and scientific research, ensuring that Ethiopia harnesses the benefits of nuclear technology effectively and responsibly.
