Prince William Considers a Shave After Army Barracks Visit

Prince William, the Prince of Wales, has reportedly indicated a potential change in his personal grooming habits following a recent visit to army barracks. The 43-year-old, in his capacity as Colonel-in-Chief of the Mercian Regiment, spent time with troops at their Bulford, Wiltshire base. Donning his military uniform and the regimental beret, the future King engaged with soldiers and their families, including those who had recently returned from a six-month deployment to Estonia as part of the UK’s NATO commitments.

The father-of-three was seen interacting with officers and their families, sharing jokes and observing various activities. A significant part of his visit included witnessing a drone combat demonstration in an urban environment. Prince William was reportedly impressed by the innovation and its potential for developing the skills of military personnel. He also took the opportunity to speak with female members of the armed forces, inquiring about their experiences and how to best support them in their careers.

A Moustache-Inspired Dilemma

During his time at the barracks, Prince William noticed a prevalent trend among many young army officers: the sporting of moustaches. This observation appears to have sparked a humorous contemplation, with the Prince reportedly suggesting he might consider shaving off his own beard, a facial hair choice that has become a recognisable feature in recent times.

William was first seen sporting stubble in late 2024, shortly after returning to his royal duties following a family holiday. This period was particularly significant, as it followed a time when Catherine, the Princess of Wales, underwent major abdominal surgery and was subsequently diagnosed with cancer. The emergence of his beard garnered considerable attention from royal followers and the media.

Family Reactions to the Beard

The Prince has previously shared insights into his family’s reactions to his beard. In a November 2024 interview for the Earthshot Prize, he recounted an instance where his daughter, Princess Charlotte, expressed strong disapproval. “Charlotte didn’t like it the first time,” he revealed. “I got floods of tears, the first one I got tears, so I had to shave it off.” He eventually managed to reassure the then-10-year-old that his beard would be acceptable.

His wife, Catherine, the Princess of Wales, has also offered her perspective on the matter. During a solo engagement at Wellington Barracks in London for St Patrick’s Day with the Irish Guards in March of the same year, she was overheard commenting on the Prince’s facial hair. “These trends come and go,” Kate remarked, adding with a touch of amusement, “I was saying to my husband, I’m not sure how long he’s going to keep his for.”

The Prince’s visit to the Mercian Regiment highlights his ongoing commitment to engaging with members of the armed forces and understanding the evolving landscape of military operations, including the integration of new technologies like drone warfare. His light-hearted interaction regarding facial hair trends also offers a glimpse into the personal side of royal duties and the dynamics within his own family.
