Landmark Appointment Heralds New Era for Nigeria’s Upstream Petroleum Sector

The recent appointment of Oritsemeyiwa Eyesan as the Chief Executive of the Nigerian Upstream Petroleum Regulatory Commission (NUPRC) has been met with widespread acclaim, particularly from industry advocacy groups. Women in Energy Network (WIEN), a prominent organization championing gender balance in the energy sector, has lauded the Federal Government’s decision, viewing it as a strong indicator of its commitment to robust governance, inclusive leadership, and the cultivation of a more diverse executive talent pool.

In a formal statement extending congratulations to Ms. Eyesan, WIEN highlighted the significance of this appointment, acknowledging President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for his forward-thinking choice. Mrs. Eyono Fatayi-Williams, President of WIEN, described the appointment as both an inspiring and historic moment. She emphasized that this development aligns perfectly with WIEN’s core mission: to actively promote female leadership and broaden career horizons for women across every facet of the energy industry’s value chain.

Fatayi-Williams elaborated on the implications, stating that Ms. Eyesan’s selection sends a powerful message about the administration’s commitment to inclusive and progressive leadership. She underscored that Ms. Eyesan’s extensive professional qualifications and proven track record make her exceptionally well-prepared to excel in this critical regulatory role.

WIEN specifically noted that Ms. Eyesan is the first woman in Nigeria’s history to assume leadership of the nation’s upstream petroleum regulatory body. This achievement is being recognized as a monumental milestone for gender representation within the crucial energy sector.

WIEN has also pledged its unwavering support for Ms. Eyesan and for women aspiring to leadership positions throughout the energy sector.

A Testament to Gender Inclusion and Future-Ready Leadership

Echoing these sentiments, Engr. Asanimo Omezi, Executive Secretary of WIEN, characterized the appointment as a substantial stride forward for gender inclusion and the development of future-ready leadership within Nigeria’s dynamic energy landscape.

“Ms. Eyesan’s appointment is a clear and unequivocal commitment to fostering a more diverse and inclusive leadership structure,” Omezi stated. “We are immensely proud of what this signifies for women across the entire industry. Our organization remains steadfast in its dedication to ensuring that these women receive the necessary support, visibility, and ample opportunities required to ascend to higher leadership roles.”
