A Young Survivor’s Plea Echoes in European Parliament

The European Parliament was recently the scene of a profoundly moving testimony, delivered by an 11-year-old Ukrainian boy named Roman Oleksiyu. His account of the devastating impact of the war, including the loss of his mother and his own severe injuries, resonated deeply with the assembled audience, highlighting the human cost of ongoing conflict.

Roman, a brave young survivor from Lviv, Ukraine, shared his harrowing experience on the 10th of the month. His story painted a stark picture of the brutal realities faced by civilians caught in the crossfire of the invasion.

A Day of Unimaginable Loss

The date July 14, 2022, is seared into Roman’s memory as the day he witnessed his mother’s death firsthand. He recounted the tragic events that unfolded while he and his mother were at a hospital in Vinnytsia, a city situated in central Ukraine. During the early stages of Russia’s invasion, a Russian missile struck the hospital building where they were seeking medical attention. Roman’s mother was tragically buried under the rubble and perished instantly.

The weight of Roman’s words was palpable, even through translation. The interpreter tasked with conveying his testimony faltered, visibly overcome with emotion, as she recounted the date of the attack and the loss of his mother. “I’m sorry. I’m overwhelmed with emotion,” she stated before pausing to compose herself, using a tissue before continuing to translate the boy’s words.

The emotional toll was so profound that when Roman began to describe the “last moment he saw his mother,” the interpreter could no longer continue. She stopped, shaking her head, tears streaming down her face. A second interpreter then stepped in to complete the translation, her own eyes glistening with unshed tears. Despite her visible distress, she placed a comforting hand on Roman’s shoulder, nodding in solidarity.

Resilience in the Face of Adversity

Roman, however, narrated his account with a remarkable composure, taking deep breaths to steady himself. He described the scene with a chilling matter-of-factness: “I saw my mother trapped under the debris. I could see her hair, and I even touched it. That was the last time I saw her. And I said goodbye.”

The attack not only claimed his mother’s life but also inflicted severe injuries on Roman himself. He sustained extensive burns covering over 45% of his body. The young boy spent approximately 100 days in a coma and underwent an astonishing 35 surgeries as medical professionals fought to save him.

Initially, medical staff harbored grim predictions, suggesting he might never walk again. However, Roman’s spirit proved indomitable. Defying these dire forecasts, he has since returned to a semblance of normal life in Lviv. A testament to his extraordinary resilience, the aspiring ballroom dancer was able to return to school in December 2023 and has even participated in a dance competition, demonstrating a powerful will to reclaim his life and passions.

A Call for Unity and Continued Support

Roman’s testimony was not just a recounting of personal tragedy; it was a powerful plea for collective action and unwavering support for his country. He urged those present to understand the strength found in unity and the importance of perseverance.

“I want to say that together, we are strong. And never give up. We must continue to help Ukrainian children,” Roman declared, his voice carrying a message of hope and a call to action that transcended his young age.

The initial interpreter, who had been so deeply affected by his words, later reflected on the impact of his courage. “Every action, every ounce of strength he showed was so powerful, shocking, and moving that even though I had prepared myself mentally, I didn’t know how to react at some point,” she admitted, underscoring the profound impact of Roman’s bravery on those who heard his story. His words served as a stark reminder of the ongoing human crisis in Ukraine and the urgent need for continued international solidarity and aid.
