Khaleda Zia’s Health Declines; Medical Experts Cite Critical Stage
Dhaka, Bangladesh – Former Prime Minister and Chairperson of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP), Begum Khaleda Zia, is currently in a critical condition, navigating a profoundly challenging phase of her medical treatment. This assessment was provided by her personal physician, Dr. AZM Zahid Hossain, on Saturday night, painting a somber picture of the political leader’s health.
“Her condition is extremely complex, and she is now going through a critical moment,” Dr. Hossain stated to reporters gathered outside Evercare Hospital in the capital. “If, by the grace of Almighty Allah and the tireless efforts of doctors, she can overcome this crisis, then we may see some positive outcome.”
Begum Zia has been under medical care at Evercare Hospital since November 23. Her health status has reportedly seen a significant deterioration since her admission. Initially admitted to a standard hospital cabin, her condition necessitated a transfer first to the Coronary Care Unit (CCU) and subsequently to the Intensive Care Unit (ICU). It is within the ICU that she is currently receiving round-the-clock medical supervision and intensive treatment.
A specialized medical board, comprising renowned specialists from both Bangladesh and international institutions in the United Kingdom and the United States, is actively overseeing her care. This board convenes regularly, typically around 10:00 PM, to meticulously review Begum Zia’s condition, analyze her progress, and formulate the subsequent steps in her treatment plan. Dr. Hossain emphasized that all medical interventions are being conducted under the leadership of Dr. Shahabuddin Talukder, adhering strictly to the collective decisions and expert advice provided by the members of the medical board.
Family Visits and Appeals for Support
The gravity of the situation was underscored by the recent visit of BNP Acting Chairman Tarique Rahman to Evercare Hospital. Accompanied by his wife, Dr. Zubaida Rahman, he spent an extended period by his mother’s bedside. Dr. Zubaida Rahman, herself a medical professional, also actively participated in the discussions with the medical board, engaging with both local and international physicians.
During his visit, Tarique Rahman conveyed his profound gratitude to the dedicated doctors, nurses, and paramedics for their unwavering commitment and relentless efforts in treating his mother. He also extended a plea to the people of Bangladesh, urging them to offer their prayers for Begum Zia’s swift and complete recovery.
Furthermore, Dr. Hossain relayed Tarique Rahman’s specific request to party leaders and activists. He implored them to avoid unnecessary gatherings at the hospital premises. This measure is crucial to ensure that the medical services provided to Begum Zia, as well as to other patients within the hospital, are not disrupted or compromised by overcrowding.
Dr. Zahid Hossain concluded by reiterating the urgent need for continued national prayer and support for Begum Khaleda Zia. He stressed that her ability to overcome the current critical phase and achieve recovery is now heavily dependent on the prayers and the successful management of her present precarious health status. The coming days are expected to be pivotal in determining the trajectory of her recovery.
