Lagos State Governor Emphasizes Health and Well-being During Festive Season Outreach
Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, has underscored his administration’s unwavering commitment to the health and overall well-being of every resident, asserting that no individual should feel overlooked, particularly during a period synonymous with love, hope, and joyous celebration. This sentiment was articulated on Thursday as he addressed patients and staff at Gbagada General Hospital. The Governor was represented at the event by Dr. Dayo Lajide, the Permanent Secretary of the Lagos State Ministry of Health.
The decision to conduct Christmas celebrations within hospital wards was a deliberate strategic choice, according to Governor Sanwo-Olu. The primary objective was to connect with patients who find themselves separated from their families during the holidays, thereby reinforcing the administration’s core philosophy of a people-centred healthcare policy. This initiative aims to demonstrate solidarity and offer comfort to those receiving medical care.
Governor Sanwo-Olu took the opportunity to encourage all Lagos residents to adopt proactive and positive health-seeking behaviours. He stressed the importance of seeking medical attention promptly, articulating that true wealth is intrinsically linked to good health. By prioritizing health, individuals invest in their most valuable asset.
Furthermore, the Governor extended a firm assurance to both patients and the dedicated healthcare workers. He reiterated the state government’s persistent commitment to ensuring the provision of essential resources necessary for delivering high-quality and compassionate care across all public health facilities. This pledge signifies a dedication to maintaining and enhancing the standard of healthcare services available to the populace.
During the impactful visit, the Governor’s delegation undertook a comprehensive tour of key hospital areas. This included visits to the Emergency and Casualty Unit, the Paediatric ward, and both the Male and Female wards. The delegation also extended their reach to the antenatal and postnatal sections. Throughout these visits, Christmas gifts were thoughtfully distributed to patients, bringing a touch of festive cheer to their hospital stay.
The Governor expressed profound commendation for the hospital’s management and its staff. He lauded their exceptional professionalism, deep compassion, and unwavering dedication. He specifically acknowledged those who were on duty during the festive period, recognizing their significant sacrifice. Their commitment, he noted, played a crucial role in ensuring that patients felt supported and valued, even while being away from their homes and loved ones.
Responding to the Governor’s address and the outreach, Dr. Olusegun Babafemi, the Medical Director of Gbagada General Hospital, conveyed his sincere appreciation for the annual outreach initiative. He described the gesture as a significant morale booster for both the patients and the hospital staff. Dr. Babafemi highlighted that such celebrations resonate strongly with the state’s overarching vision of instilling hope and providing encouragement to patients. He also offered prayers for their swift and complete recovery.
The collaborative spirit of the event was further exemplified by the partnership with the Rotary Club of Gbagada. Led by its President, Rotarian Tosin Olawoyin, the club actively participated in the distribution of Christmas gifts. This collaboration underscores the vital importance of public-private partnerships in bolstering healthcare delivery and enhancing patient welfare within the community.
A particularly memorable highlight of the outreach was the presentation of awards and gifts to the Outstanding Staff of the Year 2025, as well as to outstanding wards. These recognitions served as a testament to excellence, effective teamwork, and profound dedication to service within the hospital environment.
The visit concluded on a powerful note of hope and celebration. Prayers were offered for the healing and renewed strength of the patients. Concurrently, the Lagos State Government reaffirmed its steadfast resolve to place the well-being and health of its people at the absolute centre of its healthcare system, reinforcing its commitment to a citizen-centric approach.
