Luke Murray, the younger son of Hollywood legend Bill Murray, has officially stepped into the spotlight as the new head coach of the Boston College men’s basketball team. This significant appointment follows a highly successful five-season tenure as an assistant coach for the University of Connecticut (UConn), a period marked by remarkable achievements for the Huskies.
At 40 years old, Murray, whose mother is Margaret Kelly, Bill Murray’s first wife, becomes the 14th head coach in Boston College’s basketball program history. He takes the reins from Earl Grant, who was dismissed earlier this month after a five-year stint that yielded only one winning season.
Blake James, Boston College’s director of athletics, expressed his enthusiasm for the new leadership. “Today marks a turning point in Boston College Men’s Basketball,” James stated on Thursday. “In Luke Murray, we have found a leader who does not just understand the modern landscape of college basketball — he has helped define it.”
James further lauded Murray’s strategic acumen, highlighting his “sophisticated offensive vision” and his “relentless pursuit of excellence.” He believes Murray is “the perfect fit to lead our student-athletes.” The statement concluded with a warm welcome: “We are thrilled to welcome Luke, his wife, Kara, and their family to the BC community.”
A Championship Pedigree
Murray’s time at UConn was nothing short of exceptional. During his five seasons as an assistant, he played an instrumental role in guiding the men’s basketball team to an impressive streak of five consecutive NCAA Tournament appearances. The culmination of this success was two back-to-back national championships in 2023 and 2024, solidifying UConn’s status as a powerhouse in college basketball.

Murray’s Vision for Boston College
Expressing his gratitude and ambition, Murray shared his excitement. “I am deeply honored and incredibly grateful to lead the Boston College Men’s Basketball program,” he said. “BC is a university with a prestigious academic reputation and a storied basketball tradition. Boston College alumni and fans will find our program defined by a standard of excellence, and our team will play an unselfish, tough, and highly competitive brand of basketball. I am excited to get to work to build this proud program. Go Eagles!”
Murray brings over a decade of coaching experience to Chestnut Hill. His coaching journey includes assistant roles at several reputable institutions:
- The University of Louisville
- Xavier University
- The University of Rhode Island
- Towson University
- Wagner College
Family Ties and Early Aspirations
Luke Murray is married to Kara Cassidy, and the couple has three children. He is one of six sons of the renowned actor Bill Murray. The Groundhog Day star’s eldest son, Homer, is 43. Bill Murray also has four sons with his second wife, Jennifer Butler, whom he divorced in 2008: Caleb (33), Jackson (30), Cooper (29), and Lincoln (20).
While Murray himself played basketball during his high school years, he candidly admits he didn’t possess the calibre required for Division I college play. This realisation steered him towards coaching, a path he embraced with remarkable foresight. As he revealed to USA Today Sports in 2017, his passion for the game extended to scouting players even as young as 14.
Reflecting on his father’s early perception of his dedication, Murray noted, “I think he thought it was a strange hobby to have when I was a kid. But now he sees how far it’s come, and he’s really proud of it.” This early passion and his subsequent rise through the coaching ranks underscore a deep-seated commitment to the sport, now poised to make a significant impact at Boston College.
