Airtel Africa Foundation, through its Nigerian subsidiary Airtel Nigeria, commemorated International Volunteer Day 2025 by recognizing the profound influence of its Employee Volunteer Programme (EVP). This flagship initiative empowers employees to contribute their time, skills, and personal resources towards advancing the Foundation’s mission across 14 African markets.
The celebration, held at Airtel Nigeria’s Headquarters in Lagos, brought together volunteers for team-building activities, testimonials, and volunteer spotlights. The event also served as an inspiring call to action, encouraging more employees to register for EVP activities and become part of the volunteer community.
The Employee Volunteer Programme: A Cornerstone of Community Impact
The EVP has become a crucial component of Airtel Africa Foundation’s community engagement strategy. It empowers employees to spearhead local Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) initiatives and champion causes that promote:
- Education: Improving access to quality education for all.
- Digital Skills: Bridging the digital divide and fostering digital literacy.
- Environmental Responsibility: Promoting sustainable practices and environmental conservation.
- Youth Empowerment: Creating opportunities for young people to thrive.
Through the programme, volunteers have made significant contributions to various initiatives, including:
- International Day of Education Essay Competition: Encouraging academic excellence and critical thinking among students.
- Teacher-for-a-Day sessions: Providing students with unique learning experiences and inspiring future educators.
- Beach clean-ups: Protecting marine ecosystems and promoting environmental awareness.
- Market sensitization exercises: Educating communities on reducing plastic waste and promoting responsible waste management.
- Airtel-3MTT NextGen Fellowship: Supporting young Nigerians in developing tech skills and pursuing careers in the digital economy.
Leadership Perspectives
Dinesh Balsingh, Airtel Nigeria Chief Executive Officer, emphasized the importance of volunteerism, stating, “International Volunteer Day reminds us that real impact begins with people who are willing to show up and serve. Today we honour the incredible dedication of Airtel employees, whose selfless commitment of time and talent is the engine behind our progress. Their contribution is the backbone of our work and the reason we continue to transform communities across Africa.”
Tangible Outcomes and Impactful Initiatives
Over the years, the EVP in Nigeria has achieved tangible results through numerous impactful initiatives. These include financial donations to the Lagos State Government’s COVID-19 control efforts. In 2025 alone, volunteers have dedicated over 200 hours of service, positively impacting the lives of over 100,000 beneficiaries.
A Commitment to Making a Difference
Femi Adeniran, Director, Corporate Communications & CSR, highlighted the significance of volunteering within Airtel Nigeria’s culture: “Volunteering is at the heart of who we are. Behind every empowered learner, every restored environment, and every connected community is an individual who believed in making a difference, and we are thankful for your participation. Our mission remains clear: to use technology, resources, and our collective humanity to build a digitally inclusive, socially responsible, and sustainable Africa.”
Looking Ahead
International Volunteer Day serves as a global platform to recognize volunteers whose contributions often go unnoticed but have a lasting impact. As the EVP continues to expand, Airtel Africa Foundation remains dedicated to increasing access to:
- Education
- Digital literacy
- Environmental care
- Opportunities for underserved communities across the African continent.
The Foundation’s commitment underscores its belief in the power of collective action and the importance of empowering individuals to create positive change in their communities.
