Opposition Party Demands Comprehensive Special Counsel Probe into Unification Church Lobbying and Political Influence
The Democratic Party of Korea has put forth a significant proposal for the appointment of a special counsel to investigate alleged political lobbying by the Unification Church, particularly concerning the flow of money and influence within political circles. The party’s stance is unequivocal: the investigation must be all-encompassing, including “all politicians from both ruling and opposition parties without exception.”

This call for an independent and broad-reaching inquiry comes amidst ongoing political tensions and accusations of collusion. Kim Byung-kee, the Democratic Party’s floor leader, addressed the party meeting, directly challenging the ruling People Power Party’s perceived stance. “The People Power Party seems to be mistaken,” Kim stated. “They are claiming a special counsel for the Unification Church as if the Democratic Party is avoiding it for some reason.” He suggested that the opposition’s eagerness for such an investigation might stem from an assumption that the Democratic Party would be hesitant to embrace it.
Kim Byung-kee emphasized the critical need to uncover the extent of the Unification Church’s involvement in the political landscape, particularly during the recent presidential election. “Let us uncover how the Unification Church intervened in politics during the last presidential election,” he urged.
The Democratic Party has consistently raised concerns about potential ties between the ruling party and certain religious organizations. Kim further articulated these concerns, stating, “The People Power Party has faced persistent suspicions of collusion with specific religious groups, including the Unification Church and Shincheonji.”
Scope of Proposed Investigation
To address these allegations comprehensively, the Democratic Party proposes that the special counsel’s mandate should be significantly expanded. The investigation should meticulously examine:
- Constitutional Violations: Any breaches of constitutional law stemming from the Unification Church’s activities and political interactions.
- Illegal Political Funding: The sources and utilization of funds intended for political campaigns or influence, with a focus on any illicit contributions or financial improprieties.
- Influence-Peddling: The mechanisms and instances through which the Unification Church or its affiliates may have exerted undue influence on political decision-making.
The party warns that any entity found to be in violation of the law could face severe repercussions. “Any violating party could face dissolution, and those involved would not escape severe punishment,” Kim Byung-kee declared, underscoring the seriousness with which the Democratic Party views these allegations.
Building on Previous Inquiries
This latest proposal for a comprehensive special counsel investigation is not an isolated demand. Jung Chung-rae, the party’s leader, indicated that this initiative is intended to follow and build upon existing investigations. “As soon as the special counsel team investigating former first lady Kim Keon-hee concludes its work on the 28th, we will immediately push for a second comprehensive special counsel,” he announced.
Jung also highlighted other unresolved issues that he believes warrant the attention of a new investigative body. He pointed to the lingering questions surrounding an alleged emergency martial law insurrection. “The identities of those who provided the names of targets for elimination listed in Noh Sang-won’s notebook, who initially planned and wrote them, and who first plotted and conspired to implement the December 3 emergency martial law insurrection remain undisclosed,” he stated.
While acknowledging the complexity of integrating the Unification Church investigation into a broader mandate, Jung expressed optimism. He previously suggested that a comprehensive special counsel focused on addressing outstanding issues from three previous special counsel investigations might not have included the Unification Church. However, he has now revised his position, stating, “I believe it is not impossible.”
Jung Chung-rae concluded by reaffirming his support for an inclusive investigative process. “I agree that including all People Power Party members involved and clarifying the truth transparently is a good approach,” he said, emphasizing the party’s commitment to achieving transparency and accountability through a thorough and impartial investigation.
