A New Dawn for Marketing in Nigeria: Bolajoko Bayo-Ajayi Takes the Helm at NIMN

The Nigerian marketing landscape is buzzing with renewed optimism following the investiture of Dr. Bolajoko Bayo-Ajayi as the first female president of the National Institute of Marketing of Nigeria (NIMN). This significant event in Lagos has been widely seen as a pivotal moment, offering the institute a crucial opportunity to recalibrate its direction, re-engage with industry stakeholders, and reignite a sense of purpose and progress.

While discussions about the institute’s recent performance have often been muted, characterized by a “graveyard silence,” many industry observers believe the challenges faced are evident. The past few years have been described by many as “rough and tough” for NIMN.

This assessment is not without substantiation. Evidence suggests that significant reforms initiated by the previous administration, led by Tony Agenmonmen, aimed at professionalizing the marketing sector, seemed to lose momentum after his tenure concluded. For instance, efforts to curb the practice of marketing by unqualified individuals, which included legal action against some top executives operating without NIMN membership, reportedly receded.

Furthermore, the Marketing Tribunal, established by the previous administration to swiftly address professional misconduct, also became inactive following the departure of its proponent. The extent of its impact, particularly in prosecuting glaring infractions within the marketing space, remains unclear to date. Capacity-building initiatives that were prominent during that period also appeared to slow down, with one practitioner noting that the subsequent board “released its foot from the accelerator pedal.”

Navigating Immediate Challenges

Dr. Bayo-Ajayi, the newly installed president, is acutely aware of the formidable tasks that lie ahead. One of her immediate priorities upon assuming office was securing new, suitable office space for the institute. She inherited a quit notice from the previous landlords of NIMN’s Ikeja GRA office early this year, presenting a significant hurdle for any new leader. However, she successfully navigated this challenge, securing a new, well-located office within the metropolis, a testament to her proactive approach.

Many believe Dr. Bayo-Ajayi’s swift success in this matter stems from her extensive experience within the institute. “I’ve been part of the institute’s activities in the past few years, serving in different capacities, though my ambition had never been to preside over its affairs,” she confessed during her investiture. This deep-seated involvement positions her to effectively lead and implement necessary changes.

A Powerful Partnership and a Call for Integrity

The significance of Dr. Bayo-Ajayi’s leadership is amplified by the fact that she will be supported by a secretariat headed by Thelma Okoh, the institute’s Registrar. Ms. Okoh’s proven track record in other professional bodies suggests a capable and experienced hand at the operational helm. This dynamic, with two women leading key positions, has been seen by some as a powerful opportunity for women in the profession to demonstrate their capabilities on a grand scale.

However, Dr. Ike Neliaku, National President of the Nigerian Institute of Public Relations (NIPR), emphasized that Dr. Bayo-Ajayi’s leadership should be recognized for her merit and the value she brings to NIMN, rather than solely for her gender. “We should see Bolajoko as being elected into that office because she merited it, and not because she is a woman. She’s there because she has many things to offer,” Dr. Neliaku stated at the investiture ceremony.

Echoing this sentiment, Ibukun Awosika, a prominent businesswoman, author, and the first female chairman of First Bank of Nigeria Plc, congratulated Dr. Bayo-Ajayi, urging her to prioritize transparency and integrity in her new role. Ms. Awosika highlighted that establishing a personal brand built on these principles would significantly bolster the NIMN brand.

Regulatory Support and Future Outlook

Dr. Lekan Fadolapo, Director General of the Advertising Regulatory Council of Nigeria (ARCON), extended his congratulations and pledged ARCON’s support, particularly in the area of capacity building. He underscored the critical importance of collaboration between NIMN and ARCON to drive the ongoing reforms aimed at advancing the marketing industry.

Stakeholders can find reassurance in Dr. Bayo-Ajayi’s commitment to elevating NIMN to a standard that commands pride and respect. “We are at a point where we are ready to make our voice louder. Marketing will be built on code of conduct and ethics, where everyone will be made accountable,” she declared, signaling a firm resolve to enforce professional standards and ethical practices across the board. This pledge, combined with the support from industry leaders and regulators, suggests a promising future for marketing in Nigeria under her leadership.
