Maintaining Law and Order: A Top Priority Ahead of National Elections
Dhaka, Bangladesh – December 22, 2025 – As the nation gears up for upcoming national elections, ensuring a stable and secure environment has been declared a paramount concern by Chief Adviser Professor Muhammad Yunus. In a high-level meeting convened on Sunday afternoon, Professor Yunus emphasized that the law and order situation must be maintained at all costs to facilitate a free and fair electoral process.
The meeting, held at the state guest house Jamuna, saw detailed discussions on a range of critical issues. Among the key topics addressed were the potential return of BNP Acting Chairman Tarique Rahman to the country and the security arrangements for the upcoming Christmas and New Year celebrations.
Swift Action Against Criminal Elements
Professor Yunus issued clear directives for the prompt apprehension of individuals implicated in illegal activities. Specifically, he ordered the immediate arrest of those involved in the murder of youth leader Sharif Osman Hadi. The Chief Adviser stressed that such acts of violence and disruption would not be tolerated and that perpetrators must be brought to justice swiftly.
The meeting provided a comprehensive review of the overall law and order situation across the country. Present at the deliberations were Home Affairs Adviser Md. Jahangir Alam Chowdhury, National Security Advisor Dr. Khalilur Rahman, and senior officials from various security and law enforcement agencies. This collective presence underscored the seriousness with which the government is approaching the current security landscape.
Investigating Attacks on Media and Cultural Organizations
A significant portion of the discussion was dedicated to the recent arson attacks targeting media outlets and cultural organizations. The progress of investigations into these incidents, including the murder of Inqilab Mancho spokesperson and July fighter Shaheed Sharif Osman Hadi, was thoroughly reviewed.
Law enforcement agencies reported that through video footage, 31 individuals have already been identified as suspects in the recent attacks on the offices of two national dailies and two cultural organizations. As of Monday morning, at least six individuals have been arrested in connection with these incidents across various parts of the country, including the capital, Dhaka. The arrested individuals have been identified as Md. Kashem Farooqui, Md. Saidur Rahman, Rakib Hossain, Md. Naeem, Md. Sohel Rana, and Md. Shafiqul Islam.
The operation to apprehend the remaining identified suspects is actively underway, with authorities committed to bringing all those involved to account.
Addressing Incidents of Provocation
Furthermore, the meeting addressed an incident near the residence of the Assistant High Commissioner of India in Chattogram, where an attempt was made to create chaos. Video footage has successfully identified three individuals believed to be involved in this act of provocation. Efforts are being made to locate and apprehend them.
