Kilifi’s UDA: Kahindi, Jumwa’s Heir?

Sebarkan artikel ini

The political landscape in Kilifi County, Kenya, is undergoing a significant reshuffling following the departure of Aisha Jumwa, a prominent political figure, from the United Democratic Alliance (UDA). Her move to the Pamoja African Alliance (PAA), led by Amason Kingi, has created a power vacuum within the UDA, prompting the ruling party to reassess its strategy for the upcoming 2027 elections.

Kahindi Emerges as a Potential UDA Candidate

Former Kilifi County Assembly Speaker Jimmy Kahindi is increasingly being considered to fill the void left by Jumwa. During a UDA grassroots sensitisation event in Kericho, UDA Secretary General Hassan Omar suggested that Kahindi is a strong contender to become the party’s gubernatorial candidate for Kilifi.

Omar highlighted Kahindi’s extensive experience as Speaker for a decade and stated that, in light of Jumwa’s defection to PAA, Kahindi could be a suitable candidate to represent the UDA in the gubernatorial race.

Kahindi’s Political Background

Kahindi is a seasoned politician in Kilifi, having spearheaded President William Ruto’s campaign efforts in the county during the 2022 elections after missing out on the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) ticket, which was ultimately secured by Gideon Mung’aro. Mung’aro subsequently won the governorship, altering the political dynamics in the region.

Furthermore, Kahindi holds a position on the UDA National Elections Board, giving him considerable influence within the party’s nomination and election processes.

Implications of Jumwa’s Defection

Jumwa’s move to PAA introduces new complexities to the political scene. While it bolsters Kingi’s influence in Kilifi, Kingi remains a key ally of President Ruto. This raises questions about whether Kenya Kwanza parties will openly compete against each other in 2027 or engage in behind-the-scenes negotiations to allocate positions.

The possibility of PAA and UDA supporting different candidates in the same county adds a layer of complication to the broader Kenya Kwanza alliance strategy.

UDA’s Balancing Act

Recent cooperation between UDA and ODM in the Magarini by-election has further blurred the political lines. The decision to support ODM’s Harry Kombe over Stanley Kenga, who was perceived as leaning towards UDA, caused unrest among some UDA supporters and fueled concerns about potential zoning arrangements.

Kenga eventually defected to the Democratic Congress Party (DCP), highlighting internal dissatisfaction with perceived tactical compromises. Omar’s recent remarks appear to be aimed at addressing these concerns and reassuring party members.

“We will field candidates everywhere as a party,” he stated, signaling UDA’s intention to establish its presence in Kilifi despite growing coalition tensions.

A Contested Gubernatorial Race

If Kahindi secures the UDA ticket, he will likely face a competitive field of candidates, including the current Governor Mung’aro, Jumwa representing PAA, and lawyer George Kithi.

The result could be a highly contested and unpredictable Kilifi race, influenced by shifting allegiances between UDA, PAA, and ODM, as well as the delicate balance within the Kenya Kwanza political alliance. The outcome of the 2027 elections in Kilifi will be a key indicator of the evolving political landscape in the region and the strength of the various political forces at play.

The situation is further complicated by the following factors:

  • Potential for Internal Conflicts: The alliance between UDA and PAA, while seemingly strong at the national level, could face challenges at the local level if the two parties field competing candidates. This could lead to internal conflicts and weaken the overall Kenya Kwanza coalition.

    • The need for careful negotiation and compromise between the two parties will be crucial to maintaining unity and maximizing their chances of success in the 2027 elections.
  • Influence of Local Dynamics: Kilifi County has its own unique political dynamics, shaped by local issues, personalities, and historical factors. These dynamics will play a significant role in shaping the outcome of the elections.

    • Candidates will need to tailor their campaigns to address the specific concerns and priorities of the local population in order to gain their support.
  • Role of the Opposition: While UDA and PAA are currently the dominant political forces in Kilifi, the opposition, particularly ODM, still has a significant presence in the region. The opposition could capitalize on any divisions or weaknesses within the ruling coalition to gain ground and challenge for power.

    • The ability of the opposition to mobilize its supporters and present a credible alternative will be a key factor in determining the outcome of the elections.

The coming months will be crucial as the various political actors in Kilifi position themselves for the 2027 elections. The decisions made by UDA, PAA, ODM, and other parties will have a significant impact on the future of the county and the broader political landscape in Kenya.
