From Aspirant Doctor to Financial Ecosystem Player: The Journey of Adebiyi Adesuyi

Adebiyi Adesuyi, the Chairman of Wealthgate Global Investments Limited, offers a compelling narrative of a life shaped by family values, educational aspirations, and an unexpected yet fulfilling career in the financial sector. His journey, from a childhood ambition to become a medical doctor to leading a prominent investment firm, is a testament to resilience, adaptability, and the profound impact of early life experiences.

Humble Beginnings and a Love for Learning

Born in Ilesa, Osun State, on April 20, 1965, Adesuyi’s roots are firmly planted in Ile-Oluji, Ondo State. His parents, the late Mr. Oluyemi Adesuyi and Mrs. Grace Adesuyi, provided a stable and loving environment. While not affluent, the family was comfortable, ensuring that Adesuyi and his siblings received the necessities for a good life and, crucially, a quality education. Their upbringing was steeped in Christian values, fostering a strong moral compass from an early age.

The family’s relocation to Ibadan, where his father worked in the Ministry of Agriculture, exposed young Adebiyi to a diverse neighbourhood. Living in the staff quarters at Moor Plantation, he formed friendships with children from various parts of Yorubaland. This early exposure to different backgrounds enriched his social understanding. He attended Ebenezer Primary School in Ibadan, a public institution so respected that it attracted children from prominent families. This experience highlights a bygone era when public education was often on par with, or even surpassed, private alternatives in terms of quality.

The Rigors and Rewards of Boarding School

A significant transition in Adesuyi’s early life occurred in 1976 with the creation of Ondo State, leading to his father’s transfer to Akure. This move meant Adebiyi commenced his secondary education at Gboluji Grammar School in Ile-Oluji, a move that placed him in a boarding house environment. His initial days were a mix of excitement and trepidation. Upon arrival, he was assigned to Ogunleye House. Fortuitously, his cousin, Mr. Bankole Ige, a final-year student and now a pharmacist, was in the same house. This familial connection provided a crucial buffer, protecting Adesuyi from the common challenges faced by new students from older, more senior students during his first year.

The boarding house experience was not just about academics; it was a crucible for personal development. Social gatherings, held monthly, provided opportunities for students to interact and bond. The discipline of waking up as early as 5 am to prepare for classes instilled a strong work ethic. For junior students, fetching water from a distant tap or stream for personal use and for their “college father” was a daily chore. Saturdays were dedicated to manual labour, including grass cutting and firewood collection for the school kitchen. These tasks, while demanding, taught invaluable lessons in hard work and responsibility. Beyond the physical demands, the boarding house fostered a sense of camaraderie, enabling him to build strong relationships with peers, seniors, and juniors alike. These social skills, honed in the boarding house, proved to be indispensable in his later professional life, shaping his ability to navigate complex interpersonal dynamics.

A Detour from Medicine to Finance

Adesuyi’s initial academic ambition was to become a medical doctor, a dream inspired by his uncle, Dr. Samuel Lawrence Adesuyi, who served as Nigeria’s Chief Medical Adviser. This aspiration was strongly supported by his parents. However, despite three attempts, he was unable to meet the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) cut-off mark for Medicine and Surgery. This personal setback prompted a period of introspection and a recalibration of his academic path.

Recognizing his aptitude for economics, evidenced by an A2 in the subject at the West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE), Adesuyi decided to pursue a field that aligned with his strengths and interests. He opted for Economics or Finance. This decision ultimately led him to Ondo State University, where he was admitted to study Banking and Finance. This redirection, though not his original plan, proved to be a pivotal moment, opening doors to a career that would define his professional life.

The Genesis of a Banking Career

Adesuyi’s foray into the banking sector began at Oceanic Bank. Receiving his appointment letter was a moment of immense joy, marking the beginning of a career that allowed him to apply his academic knowledge in a practical setting. The banking industry proved to be a fertile ground for his professional development, offering extensive training in various aspects of banking and management. This period was instrumental in building the foundation for his extensive experience in the financial world.

A Family Built on Love and Support

The narrative of Adebiyi Adesuyi is also one of a cherished family life. His father, the disciplinarian of the household, instilled a strong emphasis on academic excellence. Adesuyi recalls instances of being disciplined for prioritizing play over studies, and his report cards were a direct reflection of his academic performance, leading to either rewards or punishments. A particularly memorable incident involved his father’s reaction to him reading a junior dictionary, emphasizing that it was for reference, not for extensive reading like textbooks.

His introduction to his wife, Folasade, was through her elder brother, Dr. Niyi Oladele, who was his university roommate. The couple met years after graduation when Dr. Oladele visited Adesuyi at his bank, accompanied by his sister. Adesuyi was immediately captivated by Folasade’s brilliance and elegance. The family connection proved to be a strong foundation, as Folasade’s mother already held a very positive impression of Adesuyi from his university days, having known him as a visitor to her son. This familial endorsement played a significant role in the blossoming of their relationship into a joyful marriage.

Advice for Aspiring Professionals

Reflecting on his own journey, Adebiyi Adesuyi offers sage advice to young individuals contemplating their career choices. He stresses the importance of self-assessment, urging them to thoroughly evaluate their academic capabilities before selecting a course of study. He believes that aligning one’s passion with their inherent abilities is the surest path to success. Furthermore, he cautions against succumbing to peer pressure or sibling rivalry, which can lead to pursuing fields that may prove challenging and ultimately unfulfilling at the university level. His counsel underscores the value of informed decision-making rooted in self-awareness and genuine interest.
